Zoo Negara Malaysia is run by The Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organization. Zoo Negara first opened its doors on November 14, 1963, and has since grown to become a famous zoo all over the world. Over 5137 specimens are housed in the zoo. Giant Panda Conservation Centre

One of Zoo Negara's most popular exhibits is the Giant Panda Conservation Centre. Xing Xing and Liang Liang, two adorable pandas, call Zoo Negara home as a symbol of friendship between China and Malaysia. But hurry, they'll only be here until 2024! Hornbill Centre

Seven species of hornbills are housed in Zoo Negara, out of a total of ten species identified in Malaysia. In 2010, the Hornbill Centre was established as a breeding centre for Great Hornbills, Rhinoceros Hornbills, Wrinkled Hornbills, and Oriental Pied Hornbills.

Reptile House

The Reptile House in Zoo Negara has both outdoor and indoor exhibits. Behold the world's largest crocodiles, the saltwater or estuarine crocodiles, who are relaxing in their pool. Tortoises, terrapins, and lizards are also on display in the Reptile House. The Reptile House's ground level houses both venomous and non-venomous snake collections.

Malaysian Elephants

Three gentle Malaysian elephants call Zoo Negara home. Siti, Sibol, and Trang, who are originally from Pahang, are in their late twenties and early thirties. Even though these elephants have long since retired from the elephant show, they remain the zoo's three superstars.

Lake Birds

Over 300 free-roaming birds live in the Tunku Abdul Rahman lake, located in the heart of Zoo Negara. The two islands in the middle of the lake are home to painted storks, ibises, egrets, swans, and pelicans. Prepare your camera for excellent photo sessions, particularly around their feeding times of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Bird Aviary

Australian Plain

A group of wallabies, as well as one of Australia's most famous icons, the kangaroo, live at this Australia-themed exhibit. A flock of emus, Australia's largest bird, share the same display as the wallabies. Pademelons, the smallest of the zoo's marsupials, can also be found in the zoo.

Humboldt Penguin

On January 23, 2010, eight Humboldt penguins traveled from a frigid Czech Republic Zoo to the tropical rainforest of Zoo Negara as part of a captive breeding operation. These flightless birds are named after Alexander von Humboldt, an 18th century explorer, who discovered the Humboldt Current off the coast of South America.

Children's World

​​Children's World is a place where you can let your kids run around and have their senses stimulated while having fun. Your children can pet the deer, goats, and miniature horses inside. Count the bunnies or tortoises in your child's displays to help them learn numbers.

Bear Complex

Out of the world's eight bear species, you can see three: Asiatic Black Bear, Brown Bear, and Malayan Sun Bear, without having to travel the globe. If you're a bear fan, the Bear Complex is where you'll find these majestic creatures. Bring a nice lunch and join the bears for a picnic.

Savannah Walk

Savannah Walk, the zoo's biggest open-plan exhibit, is home to Sable antelopes, Scimitar-horned oryx, giraffes, ostriches, zebras, and white rhinoceroses, among other African creatures. The Savannah Walk closely resembles the actual Savannah lowlands in Africa, despite the lack of trees to provide shade.

Hippopotamus

Duke, Kibu, and Chombie are members of a family of Nile Hippopotamuses at Zoo Negara. We commemorated the arrival of two Nile Hippopotamus calves in 2009. Observe the pygmy hippopotamus as it submerges in the water. It's so still that it could pass for a large rock!

Mammal Kingdom

Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium

Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium is one of the country's oldest public aquariums. It is the country's first-ever exhibition on the Malaysian River Journey, focusing on aquatic animals and vegetation from the highlands to the sea. The aquarium has uncommon and endangered species such as crabs, prawns, aquatic insects, and aquatic vegetation, as well as fish that are regularly found in Malaysian rivers.

Cat Walk

The African Lions at Zoo Negara's Cat Walk are the real-life Lion King, reclining on the platform of their open-concept display. During the early morning or late afternoon, look for our newest bundles of joy, the Malayan tiger cubs, playing with their mother in their exhibit.   • Zoo Huts: There are several zoo huts throughout the zoo where you and your family may relax.
  • Free WiFi: Free public wifi is provided at the main gate, show amphitheater, and Giant Panda Conservation Centre, so you can stay connected.
  • Stroller: Our new stroller station now offers a baby stroller service. On a first-come, first-served basis, stroller service is available at Information Counter B. RM20.00 is the rental fee.
  • Lockers: Lockers are provided for personal belongings storage at the Ticket Counter. The rental cost is RM2.00.

Conservation and Education at Zoo Negara

One of Zoo Negara's key aims is to conserve Malaysian wildlife. Animals like the False Gharial and Milky Storks are critically endangered species that are less well-known than the Malayan Tiger or Bornean Orangutan. These two species have been successfully bred at Zoo Negara, and work is currently ongoing in tandem with the local Wildlife Department to release them back into the wild!

Visitor Tips

  • The zoo offers lockers for RM 2 that you can use to store your valuables.
  • If you are traveling with old persons or those who are unable to walk through the zoo, wheelchair services are available for a refundable fee of RM 50.
  • In addition, the zoo has a few huts where you may rest for a while if the searing heat has taken its toll on you and you are feeling fatigued.
  • Wear comfortable footwear if you don't want your feet to suffer during your stay. If you get tired of walking, some trams go around the zoo that you may use. If you want to utilize the tram system, you must purchase a tram pass at the tram counter.
  • The Zoo Negara is enormous; unfortunately, most of the grounds are not shaded to simulate the animals' natural habitat. Bring a hat, an umbrella, and plenty of drink, as the heat may be harsh on a hot day.
