What is the Awana SkyWay?

The Awana SkyWay is an aerial gondola lift system that takes visitors up to the Genting Highlands. The Genting Highlands is located in Pahang, Malaysia, and it’s a resort development filled with hotels, casinos, malls, and theme parks. Just 35 km away from Kuala Lumpur, it is a popular weekend getaway from the city.

The Awana SkyWay is one of two cable car routes that travel this route (the Genting SkyWay is the other).

When was the Awana SkyWay Cable Car Built?

The Awana SkyWay Genting Cable Car was built as a way to reach the Genting Highlands.

The Genting Highlands was established by the late Chinese businessman Lim Goh Tong in 1965 as a convenient holiday destination from Kuala Lumpur. It is located at the peak of Mount Ulu Kali in Genting Sempah, which is 58 km from Kuala Lumpur.

The Genting Highlands Resort opened to the public in 1971, and since then has held the only casino license in the country. Over the next 30 years, it continued to grow

In 1977 the first cable car system was built connecting Awana Station and Genting Highlands Resort. This was an aerial tramway system with small two-passenger cabins.

It ceased its operations in April 2014 to make way for a new gondola lift system. This current system opened in 2016 and has 109 gondolas that can seat between 6 to 8 people. Today, it is the most popular way of getting to the Genting Highland tourist destination.

Construction

The Awana SkyWay Cable Car is a mono cable gondola lift built by Leitner Ropeways. They run along solid cable wire ropes that are 60 mm in diameter. Its foundations are made of 22 pylons anchored to the bedrock on four Caissons. These Cassions are one of the safest and strongest foundations, designed specifically for hilly terrain.

Structure

The Awana SkyWay is made up of 109 gondolas (or cabins) with 99 standard gondolas, and 10 glass-floored gondolas. Each standard gondola can carry 10 passengers, while the glass-floored gondolas have a maximum capacity of 6. It has a maximum speed of 6 meters per second (21.6 km/h) and can make the 2.8-kilometer journey up the mountain peak in just 10 minutes. This means that the gondolas can carry up to 3,600 passengers per hour.

Awana SkyCentral

Awana SkyCentral is the building that houses both Awana Station and the Awana Transport Hub (a bus station). The building also has two floors of retail outlets and restaurants. These include Taste of Asia and Edibee for excellent East Asian snacks, and Nam Heong Ipoh or Malaysian Food Street for local Malaysian fare.

The Genting Highlands Premium Outlets is located right next to Awana SkyCentral, and has over 150 outlet stores for big brands like Coach, Hugo Boss, Kate Spade, Adidas and more. Chin Swee Cave Temples

This Taoist religious site is located on the slopes of the Genting Highlands. It was built by Lim Goh Tong, the man who developed the Genting Highlands, in honor of the Buddhist figure Chin Swee. The caves were carved out of the bedrock and feature ornate prayer halls, massive statues of the Buddha, and an iconic pagoda.

SkyAvenue Complex

SkyAvenue Genting is the terminal point for the Awana SkyWay, and is also a lifestyle mall. There are shops, restaurants, and plenty of fun family activities like Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Jurassic Research Center, and Zombie Outbreak.

Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

An indoor theme park located at First World Plaza right next to SkyAvenue Station. It has over 20 exciting attractions. These include a roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, a swinging ship, bumper cars, and a large gaming arcade.

Children who are below 90 cm tall can ride on the Awana SkyWay Cable Car for free.
Children under 16 years old need to be accompanied by an adult who also has a valid ticket at all times.
Smoking any product that produces smoke or vapor (including cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, vapes, etc) is strictly prohibited throughout the journey.
Pets are prohibited at all stations and inside the gondola.
If you choose to stop off at Chin Swee Station to visit the Caves, please keep your ticket handy in order to continue your journey.
All passengers are allowed to carry one aircraft-cabin-size bag into the gondola. Larger bags will be subject to a surcharge of RM20 (for a one-way journey) or RM35 (for a return journey).
Awana SkyWay has two types of gondolas - standard and glass floor gondolas. Standard gondolas seat 10 passengers, including children, while glass floor gondolas can seat 6 passengers.
Standard gondolas are wheelchair and stroller accessible, but baby strollers are allowed in the glass floor gondola.
